Product Description

Concentrating on the classic poems by the greatest poets of World War One, this collection contains 250 poems by 80 poets. It includes such enduringly popular poems of the war as Brooke's sonnets and McCrae's "In Flanders Fields". There are also examples of the once hugely popular poems which were written as propaganda. Historical and biographical background material, extracts from diaries, personal letters and autobiographies illuminate the poetry. Poets featured include Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, Edward Thomas, Charles Sorley, Isaac Rosenberg, Herbert Read, Robert Graves, Vera Brittain, Rose Macauley, Eleanor Farjeon, D.H. Lawrence, John Galsworthy, Edmund Blunden, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Walter de la Mare, John Masefield, Lawrence Binyon, John McCrae, Ivor Gurney, John Oxenham, Arthur Graeme West and Rupert Brooke.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly representative collection, 30 Jul 2003
Minds at War, a collection which lives up exactly to its title, merits every possible attention. For the serious student or the general reader of the literature of this world clash, the book offers as wide a choice from the literary heritage of the Great War as one may hope for. It supplements this with a wealth of background information to the conflict, be it historical or biographical. Apart from poetry, it also contains diaries and letters, two forms which add to the diversity in the number of personal approaches the poetry offers in itself.
Two additional features of this highly interesting book consist in a substantial selection of wome's war poems, a line of approach which has remained underestimated for far too long, and an interesting selection of propagandist verse; the latter sheds a specific light on the degree to which this war (and indeed, any wars) was started as a war of opposing minds. This rich and general anthology certainly deserves its place among the literary collections on its subject.
