5.0 out of 5 stars Great reading, enjoyable insight into a pro punter's life., 11 April 2001
By A Customer
This book is an interesting insight into 'how things used to be' - and how things will soon be again following the demise of UK betting tax from January 1st 2002. Alex Bird was born the son of a small-time bookmaker in the north of England. His dream was to work with his father in the family business. Ultimately, he chose to be a professional punter, and this book is full of colourful stories of his childhood memories, people who played a great part in his life - and full details of many of the coups that made him one of the greatest (and/or most famous) pro punters Britain has ever produced. For those who want to make a few pounds at the horses, this book also supplies details of Alex'es "thieving" bets (as he called them - because they produced much profit for him over the years) - a ready to use system for the casual punter - straight from Alex Bird himself. In fact, though, the real value of this story is in the insight it gives into the world of betting during most of the 20th Century. It is a fun, at times moving, read, full of home-spun wisdom, great insights into racing lore, and more than a few laughs along the way. One of the wisest buys I have ever made. I for one thouroughly endorse it.
