Product Description

From the Author

A Herefordshire Cider Saga.
"Of Apples and Serpents" is the story of Tom Beddows, a boy of humble origins, who grew up in a Herefordshire village in the nineteen forties and fifties. It is a remarkable tale of success and failure, and love and hate, in which either coincidence or fate shapes a series of extraordinary events. The ebb and flow of fortune take place against a background of cider-making in rural Herefordshire and the inexorable rhythm of the seasons, at a time when country life was very different from that of today. This Cider Saga is thoroughly recommended to all those who enjoy an exciting story with vivid descriptions of the ever-changing moods of the countryside. The author is well known as a landscape painter and in this, his first novel, he uses an artist's eye to describe in words scenes as evocative as those painted by his brush.

Having an interest in traditional Cidermaking myself, I found the book to be a thoroughly enjoyable read from start to finish.

It's a pity the 'Recipe' handed down to Tom wasn't actually divulged ! ;o)

5.0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding : full of evocative countryside descriptions., 16 Dec 2000

This book is enchanting: a cleverly written book. I found it rivetting from the first page to the last. It is one of those books that you can't put down, so gripping is the story. The background is vividly portrayed and I felt as if I was actually experiencing the changing seasons in the Herefordshire countryside. The little illustrations drawn by the author help to bring the story to life. The ending is quite unexpected. I understand that this is his first book and I can't wait to read the next one.

This book just grabs you. From the first page to the last it is spectacular. The artist/authors drawings bring everything to life.

I found myself waiting on Toms every move.

This first book by Mike Knight is a credit to him and his imagination. I look forward to his next publication just like i look forward to each new picture.
