Most of us rarely even notice lichens; in industrialised areas only the most onobtrusive forms are found.

However, lichenology is far from a purely academic pursuit; among other things, lichens are a sensitive and accurate long term indicator of air quality. As such, this atlas helps to chart the success, or otherwise of clean air policies, which ultimately affect us all.

This atlas represents the compiled results of many years of painstaking field research by numerous lichenologists and is the definitive work on this subject.
