This book is not just the story of Charlton Athletic football club. It is an extremely well researched life history of one of Englands less fashionable clubs. This book records the way the CLub was born in the streets of South East london, it's rise to prominence either side of WWII, it's slow decline into near bankruptcy and it rise from the 'jaws of death'. Not filled with endless statistics but filled with insights into the people, personalities and politics that have shaped this Football Club.

A must for all followers of the English national game.

As a fan and supporter since 1945, 'Valley of Tears: Valley of Joy' brings back so many great memories of countless Saturday's spent at the Valley. Great text, with hundreds of action photographs, show the Addicks from the 'good old days' to the sad times in the '90's and thankfully back to the good days again.

In light of the excellent start to the current 2003/2004 season, Redden's book provides an excellent review of the club's historical struggles to survive as a club, specifically highlighting the efforts of a handful of individuals & supporters to ensure the Addicks continued success at The Valley.

A 'must read'for all true football fans
