This landscape format book offers a series of very enjoyable profiles in sharp images and well-written words of the most famous ships ever built in Scotland's legendary shipbuilding region, the River Clyde around Glasgow. Each major sailing ship, ocean liner, warship or freighter is given a two page spread, with both an engaging story of the ship, as well as a full-page image of the ship in either a black and white or colour photo, or a colour reproduction of an oil painting. An additional section features smaller, but still excellent colour photos and caption profiles of local Scottish steamers and other craft that were also built on the River Clyde. While there is not much in this book about the actual construction of these ships or the shipyards they were built in, this is nonetheless the best visual "catalogue" I've seen of Clyde-built ships! The colour images of the liners Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth 2 and the colour side profile painting of the Scottish paddle steamer Waverley are alone well worth the price of this book!
