Product Description

Synopsis
This work is the culmination of years of research into the royal family of Montenegro and its role in European history. The focus is on the life and times of King Nikola I of Montenegro (1841-1921), an era during which the country played a vital role in European dynastic and political affairs. Filled with extensive photographic material combined with the royal family's personal letters and diaries, and drawing on a wealth of material from the archives held by the Museum of King Nikola I in Cetinje, the book tells the story of Montenegro's last ruler and his family. It delves into the remarkable marriages, political triumphs and disasters, the ruler's pivotal role in World War I and the family's lives as exiles. There is also a huge amount of historic material both photographic and documentary, as well as in-depth treatment of related topics: earlier Montenegrin and Balkan history, relations with Serbia's royal family, and international relations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Europe`s forgotten dynasty re-discovered, 18 Feb 2006

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Montenegro's Royal Family - suppose most will ask themselves was there ever one? The answer is yes, but I am afraid often it is quite forgotten. And there are reasons for it. The princes of Montenegro were no major European players, more like local chieftains. But for a very short times the princes and since 1910 kings of Montenegro were well connected with the major European houses mostly due to the dynastic marriages of their princes and more importantly their princesses - the Queen of Italy a born a princess of Montenegro; Russian Grand Duchess born princesses of Montenegro, a Battenberg princess and a princess of Mecklenburg in the family. From obscurity propelled into the first rang of European royalty, one might say. Quite an impressive marriages policy!!!

This book is excellent as it documents the raise and fall of the dynasty in a most spectacular fashion. The pictures are amazing, covering every member of the dynasty. The texts are informative and give you a good impression. However, I feel the pictures are the greatest asset as they speak for themselves.

I can just echo the previous reviews and can highly recommend this book; for those who knew nothing and for those who know already it is worthwhile having. 5 stars are well deserved!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A tremendous title, 2 Jul 2003
By D Carter (Cambridge, England) - See all my reviews
A tremendous title, beautifully narrated and packed with wonderful photographs and documents. I am an avid reader of Montenegrin history and I have read some intelligent studies of Montenegro's historical role and development as a society, but before coming across this book, I had not found an in-depth biography of King Nikola and the royal family. As someone who has a long standing interest in this subject I can say that this book is really a great find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nikola and Milena, King and Queen of the Black Mountain, 11 Mar 2004
By A Customer
As a a newcomer to Balkan history and having just read this monumental history of Montenegro and its royal family I feel I have been educated in the huge history of this region and its volatile neighbours, whilst also being told the fascinating story of its final ruler. M Houston has captured the grandeur of the country and the era, and yet manages to give such an intimate portrait of this complex man (Nikola). The book is packed with beautiful pictures and many wonderfully restored photos of the Royal Family. I recommend this amazing book 110% and (as in my case) it makes the most appreciated of gifts. Enjoy, learn and enjoy some more.
