AJ Marriot has achieved a small miracle with this book! It covers the tours made in Britain by Laurel & Hardy and has been lovingly researched. I commend it to any Laurel & Hardy fan world wide

I don't know why I picked this book up as I have virtually no interest in Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy. But for some reason I started to read and before I realised I was 20 pages into it. A really interesting read for anybody at all, easy to follow, just not so easy to put down.

This is a weighty, meticulously researched and beautifully written book. It is not only a major contribution to theatrical history and a valuable reference book, but also a penetrating and moving analysis of the changing fortunes and lives of Laurel and Hardy - the most celebrated of all comedy double acts. Marriot describes the astonishing adulation with which they were received in Britain in 1932 and 1947, when at the height of their cinema fame, and the more daunting position that confronted them in later visits when they were ageing and no longer in good health. With their cinema careers behind them, they undertook two more exhausting tours in the British variety theatre circuit. Marriot provides us with a sensitive treatment of how they coped with all the demands put on them, many of which were self-imposed, along with telling insights into the changing character of popular entertainment in the latter half of the twentieth century.
