Whitewater South Alps is of course a classic and every Alps paddler in the nation will already own three copies. The strengths of the first book are there still. Things kick off with lucid advice on travelling to the Alps, itineraries, rafting and suchlike. The book is peppered throughout with suggestions for off-river activities and ‘culture’, whatever that is; the author lacks the get-me-to-the-next-river one-dimensional tunnel vision of many boaters and even has an unsavoury obsession with ice cream. The river guides remain clear, sensible and enticing. Enough information is given to offer a trip free of nasty surprises, but reading and running the river is left to the individual. Photos are usually selected to give a good indication of a river’s character and will raise a smile or two. The real question is, do you need to shell out for the new edition? Yes, you do. There now, that was simple. There are some new river guides, and in the obvious case of the Guil, massive floods have reamed out the river in recent years. Less obvious but arguably more crucial are the numerous small but significant updates which occur throughout; the rivers of the Alps are a dynamic environment and the rivers are constantly changing; and that’s before the dam builders get to work. So, there you have it, then. The classic book just got a new lease of life. Inspirational.
