5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly Right, 9 Oct 2000

This book tells it exactly how it is. Don't just read it on the web--if you are between the ages of 25 and 30 (as is the target audience), you need this book close at hand. Maybe it's also useful for older folks, but I'm not there yet. I'm still hoping Cornford is partly wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book I wish I had found years ago, 3 May 1999
By A Customer
As a Bishop's adviser I have sat on innumerable Church Committees. Anyone who has ever sat upon such a committee will immediately recognise the sport of comma hunting. This book is the ultimate survival guide and I am sure I would have been more successful If I had known about the principle of unripe time years ago! I will be buying copies to give as presents to a few people.

5.0 out of 5 stars The timeless and indispensible guide to political behaviour, 17 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Cornford's work is a classic: I was lent my first copy by a particularly amiable High Court judge, whose view it was essential reading for anybody who ever had to sit on a committee of any sort. Written as a humourous primer-cum-commentary on university academic life, Cornford's work is the source of many original and wholly timeless observations on political activity in institutions of any size.

For example, he recommends that if you want to get a proposal carried, you should move it in the break before lunch, where everybody will vote for it rather than discuss it further. It was Cornford who first described the various rationales for not doing anything new in any institution, from the principle of unripe time (that what you propose is an excellent idea, but that the point at which it should be done has not arrived) to the principle of the wedge (that what you propose ought not to be dome because of the danger that if X - which is wholly laudable, reasonable and moderate is allowed, that Y, the more radical and unpopular choice cannot be resisted).

This a short book, but I return to it more frequently than any other in my library.
