Product Description

Book Jacket

There are a few throws in judo more powerful or more dramatic than osoto-gari; when an attacker connects properly with the reaping leg the effects can be devastating. Accordingly it has been one of the top scores in judo for generations.

It is in fact the favourite throw of Yasuhiro Yamashita, the most successful international competitor Japan has ever produced. Winner of the All-Japan Championships on nine occasions and World and Olympic Champion Yamashita was undefeated from 1977 until his retirement in 1985. During that time he became the most familiar figure in the world of judo.

Here Yamashita for the first time reveals his understanding of osoto-gari. He explains the basics, grips and posture before moving onto the different variations. Renowned as a technician he emphasises the importance of good style yet acknowledges the special demands of competition.

Osoto-Gari is a valuable addition to the Ippon library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for heavy-weights!, 18 Oct 2003
By J. Concannon (Moncton, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Yasuhiro Yamashita's judo has always been exemplified by technical perfection - despite his size. Like many Judo players, I have not used Osoto-Gari in shiai since I was a boy; Yamashita's study of the throw has made me rethink. He demonstrates how to throw opponents both bigger and smaller, and his explanations reflect years of study in the technique. There are also extensive sections on renraku-waza and renroku-waza, as well as counters and tricks. Once again, if you are a coach you should own this book already - anything else is a disservice to your students. If your tokui-waza is osoto-gari you would be mad not to own it. And if you are the kind of player who was convinced Osoto-gari would never be for you, trust me this book will make you think again too.
