Product Description

Product Description
Twenty years after Britain's best selling karate book 'The Beginner's Guide to Shotokan Karate' first appeared, the author, John van Weenen, is publishing his amazing autobiography. In Funakoshi's Footsteps is a unique work and gives an honest, refreshing evaluation and insight into the 'not so idealistic world of Shotokan Karate', as seen through the eyes of a prominent British teacher. It 'pulls no punches' and exposes the myths surrounding many Japanese and British instructors, and offers a wealth of invaluable metaphors contained in more than two hundred individual stories. Above all, John's autobiography is filled with realism. Mistakes, (and there are plenty of those), humour, tragedy, compassion, romance, heartache and encounters and experiences with what resembles a 'Who's Who' of Japanese and English instructors since the death of Master Funakoshi.

About the Author
Only now, after a lifetime of experiences and forty years studying Karate-do, has John van Weenen put pen to paper and written his autobiography. The result is astonishing, providing a graphic account of an adventurer who has become one of Britain's most respected and influential instructors. From less than auspicious beginnings, John began the practice of karate in Australia. After being awarded his black-belt, he returned to England, before leaving for Tokyo to train at the Japan Karate Association. Arriving back in Britain in 1968, John aligned himself to the world famous Hirokazu Kanazawa, but ultimately it was Gichin Funakoshi, the 'Father of modern day karate', whose philosophy intrigued him. He found particular poignancy in the Master's words "Make benevolence your lifelong duty".

5.0 out of 5 stars In Funakoshi's Footsteps- Fantastic, 15 Sep 2004
By A Customer
I have read this book 3 times and can simply say it is the best autobiography I have read. It is clear and simple to read with over 240 individual stories of Sensei John Van Weenens experiences - some good , some bad and some very tricky situations. All together it is enjoyable reading with an index that allows you to jump backards and forwards as you wish.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about Karate and beyond this those who just want to be motivated by one man's spirit for "living the moment".

A great motivator this book and alot better than the usaul autobiographies - the stories are real!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars nostalgia, 1 Jun 2009

(REAL NAME)
Apart from anything else, I knew many of the folks mentioned in this book back in the 70's. It was also very sad to read John's description of the death of the late great Eddie Whitcher, which moved me deeply. I found John's autobiography fascinating, it was, for me, a visit to the past but from someone else's viewpoint and with their history included. All in all I thought it well written.
