5.0 out of 5 stars Great Chess Openings, 1 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Quintessential book by Chess Grandmaster Raymond Keene who answers many queries on the game of chess and its openings. Ever wondered the secret to chess genius Garry Kasparov's successful game openings or why some openings are favoured more than others? Then this is the book for you. With fresh discussions of some highly analysed moves in chess history, the collection is a great one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Synopsis, 6 Jul 2007
This book traces the development of combinational thought from the early days of chess events up to the reign of world champion Anatoly Karpov. By identifying key recurring elements in the decisive combinations of the champions, Keene shows how readers can recognise these elements and pull off crushing finishes in their own games.
Raymond Keene is a British Chess Champion, and the first British Player to achieve a FIDE (World Chess Federation) Grandmaster norm. He was awarded the OBE for services to chess in 1985. He is Chess Correspondent of The Times, The Sunday Times, The Spectator, and The International Herald Tribune. He is a prolific author of chess books, several of which are classics of the genre. He has organised three World Chess Championships.

5.0 out of 5 stars a review of the entire history of opening theory, 25 Nov 2002
By A Customer
this book is an expert commentary by one of the world's top chess writers. grandmaster ray keene has published over 100 books and he also writes the daily column for the times and the international herald tribune. he was the chief second to korchnoi in his 1978 world title bid.

in this book he traces the development of openings ideas from the late 18th century to the days of kasparov. keene shows that dogmatism is always defeated and that modern champions are characterised more by their open mindedness and receptivity towards new and risky ideas than by hidebound acceptance of abstract rules! this book will really help you to play more daringly and more strongly in your chess openings!!
