Sir Stirling Moss said it all when he insisted "This well-rounded book does justice to motor racing's pioneers and to a most exciting event, whose drama continued to the very last few miles of the day-long epic."
Most racing books lack the human touch. They are strong perhaps on technical information, but the participants lack colour and dimension.
This volume brings motor racing's pioneering heroes to life in its detailed, informative and good-humoured 20 chapters. We have vivid glimpses and eyewitness accounts of the excitable racewinner, 'Red Devil' Camille Jenatzy, and his chief rival, the urbane Rene de Knyff.
And we empathise with Baroness Axeline de Caters, who didn't want her husband to compete. Though TRIUMPH doesn't skimp on detail - it has been painstakingly researched - it is fast-paced, lively and a joy to read.
The 1903 Gordon Bennett race was the first international event to be held in Great Britain. This book underlines the significance of the event. It firmly establishes the period - and the detail even includes both a historic and a driver's view of the difficult Irish circuit.
The book also contains many jokes and anecdotes - and explains how the 'Gordon Bennett!' euphemism originated in Irish hotel overcharging!
The 100 photos provide graphic and atmospheric accompaniment, and the book by the award-winning writer richly deserves its 'Book of the Month' accolade by Classics magazine.TRIUMPH is a timely and refreshing antidoe to modern Grand Prix racing and its spin-off pr offerings.
