Mr Layton has gone to a lot of time, trouble & effort gathering & assembling all of the information to create this masterpiece about the life of our Grand Master Gichin Funakoshi. Mr Layton's long standing credentials in writing about the history of karate and Shotokan in particular make him best suited to talking about such an important subject and person.

With a glowing forward by the highly respected and founder of Shotokai: Master Mitsusuke Harada, it's not surprising that it is hard to find for sale anywhere these days - people just don't want to let go of it!!

Instead of just presenting a stale pile of facts about Funakoshi, Mr Layton has written the book as a story, as if the writer and interviewer were there first hand talking about the Founder of Modern Day Karate and Shotokan, almost as if it were an auto-biography.

A nice easy to read and simply laid out book jam packed full of information that should entice all Shotokan karate-ka. It would go hand in hand & compliment Funakoshi's own book "Karate-do: My Way of Life"

Well worth buying in order to compare the information in both books and get to the real roots of how & why karate came onto the world stage of Martial Arts & why Funakoshi was so successful in achieving this feat. Also to get close to this all time great and put you in his shoes and get a taste of what sort of man he was and how he thought.
