5.0 out of 5 stars Great walks in the Land's End Peninsula, 1 Jul 2003
By R. E. Cox (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Land's End Peninsula, West Penwith, Cornwall,is a unique, self-contained area of beautiful coast and moors which also has a numerous collection of ancient sites from the Neolithic Era, the Bronze and Iron Ages, the early Christian era and the medieval period. It's mystical and fascinating granite landscape in a stark granite base, sometimes shrowded in mist, sometimes in piercing clear light enfolds one in a real sense of the past as ever-present. If you visit this area for the first time you will be hooked as I was. I have since been back there at least annually for nearly 40 years. This book, by an artist who lives on the Penwith moors and who has walked the whole region for many years, is the seminal book of walks on this area and which link many of these sites. The book is gorgeously produced with care and not only has some of the most atmospheric photos one can find of the sites themselves but also contains history and discussion on the sites as well. One of the great experiences is arriving on foot for the first time in the course of these walks and this feeling yet comes alive in the text too. If you're planning to go - and the walks are not overlong in a relatively small area of country - this is the book to use. If you're not, but still have an interest in this field you can't go wrong with this book.
