Synopsis

An entertaining account of life in a film crew.

From the Author

Here's a summary and some reviews of the book
"If you don't come on this all-expenses paid First Class trip around the world, we won't give you lots of money."

Oh, alright then. Richard Hakin's career as a Camera Assistant in the film and television industry has taken him to Spain, Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Japan, America, the Bahamas, New Zealand - and Yorkshire. Along the way he has tangled with an intriguing cast of characters on both sides of the camera, from demented directors and leering cameramen to talking dogs, Mr Puniverse and Mrs Thatcher, just a few of the players in this entertaining account of life in a film crew. And for those planning a similar career there is invaluable advice on how to break into the world of film and television. After all, it's better than working.

"...deftly describes the international nature of filmmaking and the consequent need to deal with an extraordinary range of different cultures. The book accurately and humorously conveys the flavour of film-making…" David Puttnam, CBE,

Producer Midnight Express, Chariots of Fire, Killing Fields.

"It made me laugh, it made me cry, it is funny and bears all the hallmarks of the horrendous reality we’ve all known." - Mark Scrimshaw, BBC Director

"...a beautifully-written, alternately hilarious, fascinating and moving account of life behind the camera......a treasure chest of anecdotes..... ...a real delight.…" - Mensa Magazine, Nov 1999

5.0 out of 5 stars A hilarious account of real life in the film industry, 18 April 2001
By A Customer
A very funny collection of traveller's tales and reminiscences from the author's career as a film camera technician. It's witty, moving, and written in a flowing style which makes it very difficult to put down - and very easy to pick up again! The final chapter contains clear, detailed, and honest advice for those considering a career in film or TV: an invaluable source of information on how to find work and training, and about what it's really like out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Humorous insight into the world of profesional film making., 27 Oct 1999
By A Customer
Richard Hakin's first book is a humorous look at the mking of programmes that we all see on the TV. An interesting book for the lay person, but a MUST for the aspiring cameraman!
