From the Author
We excavated a Roman villa and prehistoric settlement for several years at Beddington, to the south of London, and after the first stage of the excavation we wrote this popular account of the excavation to give people an idea of what was found and how the work was done. The site was on a former sewage works where sewage sludge was once regularly spread - but it was also right next to a modern sewage works, which made working conditions unpleasant when the wind was in the wrong direction!
