5.0 out of 5 stars well-informed and humane guide for parents of gay young peop, 2 Jul 1999
By A Customer
When I discovered my son was gay I was desperate for something to read on the topic. I am grateful that I found A Stranger in the Family. It gave me all the information I needed, set out in plain language and with a humane and understanding author to guide me. I really feel that I know Terry Sanderson after reading this book. He feels just like the perfect friend for someone in this situation.I would recommend any parent who is struggling with the knowledge that their son or daughter is homosexual to read this book. It will help them through the crisis and perhaps save their family from unnecessary break-up.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Worst Possible ....., 13 Jul 2007
By wayne (manchester UK) - See all my reviews
I was amazed to find that this book was initially written in 1991 - I would have dated it more like 1931 after reading only a few pages. The author is fond of using the term 'homosexual' and provides a selection of other outdated terms. There is a chapter on AIDS, which borders on irresponsible and there is even a section on methods you can use to stop thoughts of how your son and his male partner might have sex - one being use of an elastic band round your wrist which you can 'snap' to get rid of the mental image. The author writes about "homosexual sex" as well as "gay life" - it just doesn't get any more patronising or misguided than this I promise you !
I rather wish Terry Sanderson was a middle aged woman during the war, this would make the sentiments in his book more understandable .... unfortunately he is not. If your son or daughter is gay, please understand that this is their sexual orientation and is akin to them having blue or brown eyes. This will make things a lot more simple and dispense with the need to wear an elastic band or attempt to embrace a parallel existence made available specifically for "homosexuals" by people like Terry Sanderson.
