Product Description

Product Description

This is a price-guide reference book containing up-to-date values, and lots of historical information on all campaign medals and related items awarded to British and Irish citizens from the second Boer War in 1899, to the current Iraq conflict. Every campaign is covered, including details of the various clasps awarded. Also covered are UN and NATO engagements where British or Irish troops were involved. A separate section is also devoted to the medals of Eire from 1916 onwards. The images are full colour, and are often full page sized.

About the Author

Stephen Philip Perkins, the son of a Royal Marine who served in both the first and second world wars, always had an interest in the medals awarded to his father and to other family members. Since actively collecting British medals, his personal collection and knowledge has grown steadily over the last 10+ years. Stephen is a member of the Orders and Medals Research Society, and since 2004 has been involved with BBC 3 Counties Radio, as the Medal and Orders phone-in expert.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin., 28 Dec 2008
This is the only book on medals that I own, so I cannot claim to speak with much authority. That said, as a budding collector I'm going to speak with some. The book does indeed give plenty of interesting history on the campaigns and shows a good-quality picture or two of each medal along with a guide to price. I would have liked to see more detail on the qualifications required for each medal and for each clasp, the latter being notably lacking. It is a shame that this book, like so many others on the subject, restricts itself to campaign medals and does not mention gallantry, meritorious or long service, coronation or jubilee medals. If you go for the other series, one can presumably obtain most of these by buying eight books or so (I exaggerate) at great expense. I'm now thinking about buying the yearbook for what I require.
