Product Description

Book Description

A book containing enough general and specialised information to suit novice and experienced numismatists alike. Collectors' Coins Great Britain is published annually and contains market values for all British non gold coins from the beginning of the introduction of steam powered coin presses (1797) until now.

The popular coin collectors handbook since 1973, and it still lists the most varieties and is still at least GB£3.49 cheaper than its nearest rival.

British coins are a fascinating field, each coin a historical document, each type has a design depicting an element of British society or culture, and the Royal family tree can be traced back on them, non only in words, but in pictures too. The fact these coins were spent by past generations and treated just like we treat modern coins, gives an insight into what people handled in days long gone. Coins can teach many aspects about the past, they can also cultivate the imagination, and who knows where that could lead.

With the help of Collectors Coins Great Britain, you can learn what's rare and what isn't, and how many British coins of each type were minted each year. You can see pictures of every king or queen, and every different denomination. You can also learn about how to distinguish between different varieties, some of which can make a substantial difference in the value of the coin.

From the Author

As a young collector, I bought my first coin book in 1988. Coincidentally it was the 1989 edition of Collectors' Coins Great Britain. I had no idea that 16 editions later, it would be me compling the 2005 edition of that very book!

I wanted the 2005 edition to include all the useful things contained in the previous R J Marles editions, but I also wanted it to be better, as there were a number of things that bothered me slightly.

I hope I succeeded in making my version of this book a worthy successor to the R J Marles version and I hope the readers will find this book a useful reference. I'm always grateful for any feedback. The best thing about producing an annual publication is that you get the chance to change it every year!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent new book for collectors of British Coins, 13 Feb 2005
By A Customer
This is great little book, informative, authoritative and good value for money. It manages to inform the reader in a light and chatty style which is very reminiscent of the early "Check your Change" series of which this is the latest manifestation. The new editor, Chris Perkins, has done a good job at collating a pretty comprehensive list of current prices for varities and proofs as well as normal dates. An up-to-date list of British coin varities is well over-due and Collectors Coins fills the slot nicely, all for under a fiver.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quick word from the author., 19 Nov 2004

(REAL NAME)
I suppose I could be considered biased for reveiwing my own book! I felt more details could be added to the Amazon listing, so if Amazon will permit me, I'll explain the contents of the book in more detail:

The book contains current market values for all British non gold coins dated 1797 - 2004. It includes all proof coins, and some patterns, as well as separate listings for Maundy and decimal coins. This 32nd annual edition (the first that I have been responsible for) is in a completely new format with an all new layout and all new pictures throughout.

The prices were gathered from my own experience dealing in coins, and using a database set up to enable the actual readers/collectors to enter price data for coins they had actually bought, or seen sold. This ensured that the prices are as accurate as possible.

This 32nd edition also contains more coin varieties and information about varieties than any previous edition.

In a nutshell, if you've owned any previous editions of Collectors' Coins Great Britain, then you should consider updating to this new version. And, if you've never owned a copy, you should make this your first!
