Hairless breeds of dogs have been found in many parts of the world since earliest civilisation. The Xoloitzcuintli, featured in Brenda Jones's authoritative book, predates the Chinese Crested by some two thousand years and its existence has been well documented in numerous Mexican and South American cultures. The Chinese Crested, which is now the most popular of the hairless breeds, is unique because it carries a gene for a long coat. The myth grew up that this was so that the long-coated puppies could keep their littermates warm! Brenda Jones unravels fact from fiction and gives a definitive account of the history, genetics and care of this fascinating toy dog.
About the Author
Brenda Jones first came across the Chinese Crested in 1978 and since then she has become the leading breeder in the UK, with a tally of six home-bred UK champions, plus champions in the United States, Sweden, Finland, France and South Africa. Brenda and her husband Barrie are founder members of The Chinese Crested Club of Great Britain, and they were deeply involved in the campaign for the English Kennel Club to recognise both varieties of the breed - hairless and the long-coated powderpuff. Their kennel was founded in 1969 with the Kojak prefix, breeding Afghans and Smooth Fox Terriers, but now they both confess that their hearts have been stolen by the delightful and intelligent Chinese Crested.
