Product Description

Product Description
Illustrated mountain bike guide for beginners and experienced riders. 24 circular routes in an area of outstanding natural beauty - all types of routes from short and gentle to long and challenging over high hills. Easy to follow directions and sketch maps.

About the Author
This book describes circular rides in Derbyshire and the Peak District National Park. The routes cover the whole length and breadth of the area. Rides of all levels of difficulty are covered; from short and easy introductory rides to long and challenging rides over high hills. The careful descriptions and clear sketch maps will make navigation straightforward.

The sketch maps in this guide give a general picture of the routes but, although each map is roughly to scale, they are not all drawn to the same scale. They are designed to be used in conjunction with an appropriate 1:25,000 scale Ordnance Survey map (see Maps and Compasses section).

Rides do change with time: large barns appear overnight, bridleways are re-routed, and quarries expand or are filled in. If you are unsure of your position or the way forward, consult your OS map.

Some features, for example gates or walls, are mentioned in the text and shown on the sketch maps only when they are necessary for navigation. If a junction is not mentioned follow the most obvious way on.

It will usually be possible to ride all of the routes as described. However there are some sections of some rides which may defeat all but the fittest and most able riders. Be prepared for short sections of pushing and even the occasional carry.

Where a route can be accessed from a railway station it is mentioned in the route information.

It is possible to start many of these rides at points other than those recommended, and to vary the routes according to taste. Doing a route in reverse will make it seem like a completely different ride. However please only ride where you have the legal right to do so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, 9 Oct 2005
By A Customer
If your new to mountain biking or, like me, havent been on one for ages then this is the book for you. The maps and descriptions are accurate but i would also recommend the relevant Ordnance Survey maps to accompany it ( you can get them at your local WH Smiths or Waterstones if you cant wait for Amazon to send them, the main ones you need are White Peak OS Explorer OL 24 and Dark Peak OS Explorer OL 1. You will need others if you want to complete the book but these two are the main ones ). The first trail i went on was the Bakewell & Haddon trail ( Route No2 in the book ). This is an excellent intro to the trails i thought and not too demanding. The book says it will take an hr, it took me 1 hr 30, it was six miles but the trails range from 6 miles up to around 30 and there isnt indications of degrees of difficulty but each trail has its ups and downs, so to speak. There are hilly bits and sometimes you have to get off and push if your not up to it (like me), but overall a great book. DO NOT go out on the trails without the essentials i:e water, tool kit, pump, phone etc. Expect bits of road riding so wear a helmet. You will encounter gravels tracks, tarmac tracks, muddy fields and other terrain so remember to take a SPARE INNER TUBE. I found this out after 25 mins riding when i got a thorn in my tyre, pulled it out and the tyre went flat in about 5 secs so don not forget this crucial piece of kit. 5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you want from a MB Route Book, 20 Sep 2004
By David A. Nash "CS-taker" (Chesterfield) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As I say in the title this is everything you would want from a Mountain Bike Book, with superb maps, descriptions and Photographs.

I have completed the Chesterfield Round which was very good, needed a little pruning in places, but I can hardly blame the author for that. A wonderfull ride with fantastic views and a little bit of technical work on roots and boulders. The route was easy to follow and we had a good idea of where we where going because of the excellent map.

The one thing that did worry me about this book is one of the photo's is of a woman riding off road without a helmet?!

After hearing horror stories of people falling off and snapping helmets in 2, which saved their lives I thought the authors would have omitted the photo.

Ride Safely - Wear a Helmet

5.0 out of 5 stars Good rides and easy to use., 8 Jul 2007
By John Linklater (Nottingham) - See all my reviews
We have now completed half the rides in this book and have found it to be accurate and easy to use, especially the maps. Looking forward to the rest of the rides when it stops raining.
