Product Description

David Rose, The Observer

The photographs are a worthy accompliment to the text. McLewin emphasises the importance of harmony with surroundings as the key to mountaineering success.

Climber Magazine - Boardman Tasker Awards

McLewin’s book - described as, ‘the voice from under the boulder, a piece of typical English understatement that reminded the judges of Shipton at his best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for the Alpine mountaineer, 13 Oct 2000
While the cryptic allusive title disguises the content of this book - an account of the author's climbs of all the 4000m peaks of the Alps - it reflects his intensely aesthetic, ascetic, and somewhat idiosyncratic approach to alpine mountaineering. McLewin's writing is spare, direct, understated, and at times provocative. The book is superbly produced, the photographs being absolutely mouth-watering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and amusing., 13 Dec 2006

Will McLewin writes well in an easy laconic manner. His stories of the ascents of the various 4000 m peaks are always interesting and to me as an amateur mountaineer, inspiring.
I think McLewin could have fleshed out a bit the discussion sections and amplified his views on such subjects as to why he climbed alone and always bivouaced rather than stay in huts as these brief asides are really excellent. I would also have liked to have known more of his background and motivation.
Good photos and amusing descriptions make this a must have for Alpine mountaineers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read - a must have book, 25 Sep 2009

Loved the book and the author's views. If you want to have a try in the Alps and are "British" it's well worth the money. The only downside is it feels quite dated, but then again I'm from that generation ;-)
