This book is well worth reading for all Tantric practitioners in the Kadampa, Gelug or Kagyu traditions and was the first account of "completion stage" practices published in the West, summing up centuries of orally-transmitted research by Tibetan and Indian meditators. As far as I am aware it is still the most comprehensive account even though it was written in 1982. Completion stage is the final group of meditation practices leading to actual enlightenment and success is guaranteed, though how soon you will be ready to start and how quickly you wil progress are not - so patient, steady effort without pushing is required! To prepare for completion stage, firm experience of self-generation as a Tantric Buddha is required (see "Guide to Dakini Land", "Essence of Vajrayana", or equivalent).

A merely intellectual understanding of these meditations is regarded as beneficial even if you are unable, or not yet qualified, to practice them. Beware however that the Gelugpa and Kadampa traditions actually practice these exercises in a modified sequence which they regard as more efficient, so if you want to start completion stage practice in either tradition you should definitely also read Geshe Kelsang's "Tantric Grounds and Paths" or an equivalent from one of the FPMT gurus.

this is a book of serious detail, and not a place to start from. nevertheless, the topics it covers it does so with clarity and depth, and is an important resource for those wishing to enhance their understanding of this area of buddhism and the teachings of this author
