4.0 out of 5 stars Just Right for the General Mackintosh Enthusiast, 20 Aug 2009
By Dr. R. Brandon (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This lavishly illustrated coffee table book is clearly aimed at the numerous visitors who travel to the various Mackintosh sites in Glasgow where they will invariably find this work on sale. The book is written in self-contained chapters and does not progress in a straightforward chronological fashion but rather looks at different aspects of the life and work of Mackintosh from various viewpoints. That said, a complete reading of the book will give an excellent review of his artistic and architectural accomplishments and also an eerily emotional closeness to his personal disappointments and social difficulties. The author has chosen to write in a style which I can only describe as a 'commentary' and although initially disconcerting it does work very well. As the book is constructed in self-contained episodes some key facts are necessarily repeated but this is not a bad thing. Professor McKean is clearly on top of his subject and very sympathetic to the case for Mackintosh as an outstanding architect and this gives a nice feel to the book. A very interesting work with many fine photographs by Colin Baxter, and probably just right for the general Mackintosh enthusiast who is not a specialist on the subject. Readers should be aware, however, that this is a rather sad tale.
