Product Description

Synopsis

A mapping of the waterways of the Potteries, an area whose development was intertwined with the advent of the Canal Age. The map shows all the canals, with opening dates (and closing dates, where relevant), locks, bridges, aqueducts, toll offices, pumping stations, tunnels and reservoirs. The map shows the Trent & Mersey Canal from Wheelock and Leek in the north to Great Haywood in the south, and includes the Caldon, Uttoxeter and Newcastle Canals, and the related Caldon Low Tramroad system, all at a scale of 1:50,000. Notes are provided on all canals and tramroads covered.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Visual Delight, 23 Aug 2009

This is not a book, but a foldout map on sturdy paper, a map that measures approximately 58cms by 42cms. (The Amazon dimensions are for the folded-up map!) It is denoted on the map that this is number five "in the Historical Canal Maps series compiled and drawn by Richard Dean" and was first published in 1997.

The area covered is from Chellshill on the Trent & Mersey Canal down to Trentham Park Lock, with a complete rendering of the Caldon and Leek branches. The line of the Uttoxeter Canal is also marked and there are also details given of the Caldon Low tramroads. In addition, areas of complexity or added interest are set out in boxes for added clarity. As well as the obvious items such as locks and bridges, the legend includes. All over the map there are discrete sections of text which give concise but detailed information on the history and construction of the canals.

Despite being in only two colours - red and black - the map is a delight to view and to read.
