Synopsis
This reprint of an early canal map is the first in a new series, "The Waterways Heritage Collection". It is a reproduction, at a slightly enlarged scale, of Charles Smith's map, originally about 4 miles to the inch, published in 1810. Its southern limit is London (and the Paddington branch) and the Thames. In the north, it reaches Leicester, via the Leicestershire & Northamptonshire Union Canal and the Grand Union Canal (at that time only in the planning stage). Various other existing or planned canals and branches are shown including the Western Union (via Aylesbury to Abingdon), Buckingham, Northampton, etc.
