Product Description

Synopsis

Birmingham has a special place in the history of England's waterways and even now evokes visions of a city criss-crossed with canals, the hub of the Midlands waterway network and the spiritual home of the narrow-boat. Although many people know that Birmingham has more canals than Venice, few people would know where to turn to find a comprehensive map of all these canals, past and present. This map, compiled from original sources by an experienced historian of canals and canal maps, is the first to show in detail all Birmingham's canals, both existing and abandoned. The complexity of the network has necessitated a large scale including all locks, junctions, tunnels, reservoirs and nearly 500 arms and private basins, together with historical notes, opening and abandonment dates and enlargements of particularly interesting parts of the system. To record such a large network at such a generous scale requires a large map size (about 34 by 24 inches), but this folds away into a wallet of strong clear plastic, making the map easy to store and protecting it from damage.
