4.0 out of 5 stars A moving little gem of Oxford History, 9 Nov 2008
By Withnail67 (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This touching little book was mentioned in the Oxford Magazine's article on the 90th anniversary of the Armistice. The author has transcribed and described every memorial to the dead of the two world (and Boer) wars in the Oxford colleges. Please note that this book does not list names, unless specifically listed on their own memorial. Being Oxford, the inscriptions are heavily influenced by the Greek and Roman classics as well as the Bible. Interesting also are the politics of listing students, fellows, and staff of the college, and how a democracy of grief was established.

The book is illustrated by atmospheric black and white photographs, and would form the basis of an emotional and sobering walking tour with a difference. A moving little book.
