Product Description

Product Description

This guide aimed at amateur musicians, students and teachers demonstrates the essential conducting techniques for the direction of singers and instrumentalists covering the preparation and rehearsals through to the performance itself.

From the Back Cover

I have never tried to teach conducting nor, apart from a brief spell in the Second Conducting Class at the Royal College in the early 1930s, have I has any conducting lessons. Two books have interested and helped me: Hermann Scherchens through and typically German treatise and Sir Adrian Boults much simpler manual. However, there must be many musicians, young or not so young, who, captured by a longing to conduct or faced with the necessity of doing so, would like information upon all aspects of conducting from first picking up a baton to the moment which we all dream about: the successful conclusion of a concert or an operatic performance.

The authors of the Art of conducing have produced a book which is practical and encouraging, have left no dark corners un-illuminated and, mercifully, have never claimed that the light shone will magically transform itself into the spotlight of stardom. If you sincerely wish to help other musicians towards truthful music-making and if you will read this book carefully you will find what it says most helpful. I wish the book and those who read it every success. (Sir Charles Groves, back cover of The Art of Conducting)

(REAL NAME)
I think most of us have, at some point in time, "air" conducted a piece of music - wether it be in the car, shower, on the loo, or making the dinner, sometimes you just can't help yourself!

It was after one of these conducting frenzis that i decided to find out a little more about the real thing. Where else to start except Amazon...I just typed in the word, and came up with a huge raft of possibilities. My main factor in choosing something was budget - and this book came in at the right level. (the free delivery also helped!). Although the fact that it was a hradcover book was a great bonus (and in the end has been a wise choice...as when I have carried it around, it has worn well).

The Book has been a real pleasure to read. It has an easy style of writing, and explains everything as if I were a raw recruit (as if..., sorry, I am...). The print quality is basic, butt good, and the layout is realativly easy on the eye (though the small print means that after a while, you need to take a break!).

It is thourough - covering every aspect of the topic (that was something in the publishers review that hit my eye). And best of all, it is an encouraging text - the authors have written as if the reader is actually going to put on their first concert.

The appendices on The Orchestra & The Preparation of Manuscript Copy are informative and complete.

Overall, I have been delighted with my purchase. It is now a treasured (and well used) part of my book collection. I would most certainly recommend it, as well as the service given by Amazon, which, for the most part has been fast, efficient, and reasonably priced. Unfortunately I still haven't conducted my fist performance...but in time...
