5.0 out of 5 stars A sobering, but considered account of the threatened species, 6 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Taking into account the subject matter, it is perhaps wrong to call this book brilliant. It is a sad reflection upon the state of the environment throughout the world that this book exists at all. By their very nature, there will always be a number of species of all creatures that will be in danger of extinction - but the sheer extent of their number, variety and location is a worrying, if not frightening prospect. However, this is not the place to express opinions on the world - rather on this book. TBW deals with the subject in an excellent manner. It should be considered suitable for anyone who is interested in the subject, be it on a professional or amateur level. This book is bigger than you expect, and generally, each species receives half of a large page for a review of it's status. The review has all the technical detail the professional should require, but is readable by and accessible to those of us of a lesser calibre! Distribution maps and a small colour drawing of the species discussed accompany the text. There are also extensive appendices apart from the main text. It's a lot of money for an amateur to spend on a single volume - but you do get an awful lot of book for you money. Let's hope that worldwide environmental policies will ensure that future editions of this book will become thinner due to the recovery of the the species included, and not their extinction.
