Product Description

City Life, May 2, 2002
The narrator’s gender is as ambiguous as his/her ambition in life, but you can't help sympathising with the insightful and often hilarious take on events

The Big Issue, May 3, 2002
Brilliant observational comedy … genuinely hilarious one-liners and a bunch of likeable characters who try, with varying success, to get drunk, stoned & laid

5.0 out of 5 stars fast moving, sharp and hilarious , 25 Sep 2006
By Janie "Jane O'Neill" (Brighton, England) - See all my reviews
This novel is written in one of the sharpest and most energetic styles I've ever read, not too dissimilar to Martin Amis but but somehow brighter and shinier. And unlike Martin Amis, the book's bizarre characters are never mere caricatures but always have a realness about them. The book has so much energy you feel energised yourself just by reading a few pages. Surely the author must have been taking proplus when he wrote it! I looked for other books by the same author but couldn't find any. Maybe he's spending a few years on his magnum opus - let's hope it's as good as this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yummy, 16 Dec 2005

Completely readable and funny, Corned Beef Sandwich is as tasty as its title. It's a great read for that terrible coach ride from London to Edinburgh and kept me guessing throughout. Less of a crime novel more comic fiction.

I'm off to buy some goldfish.

4.0 out of 5 stars The goldfish, it's about the goldfish, stupid, 28 Oct 2005
By Eva Ridgeway (Newcastle) - See all my reviews
The unnamed character at the centre of this story works in a rundown prole bookies in south central Manchester. After an unnerving armed hold-up our heroine discovers she) has handed over her own bag to the gunman, containing the halal corned beef sandwich, lip balm etc. and in return has been landed with a bag stuffed full of money. Needless to say certain parties are very eager to trace the missing money and are on the heels of the bookies clerk. House mates ex- Californian surf god Axel, exuberant Geordie Sheena and flash, entrepreneur Theo (who also happens to be X's brother) are inevitably drawn into the ensuing frantic chaos. While X tries to figure out a way of staying alive, he takes comfort from his precious fishes: Judas, Satan, Lorraine, Little Kurt and Tankgirl. A bright and funny crime caper with plenty of chuckles and strong on the seesawing relationships of the characters. An enjoyable first novel from a very promising writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars mancunia irreverentia
Ernest Hemmingway. The most minimalist of writers. He could strip down a sentence faster than a bribed judge. He would struggle to fit Corned Beef Sandwich into 275 pages. Read more
