Product Description

Review

"Berlin Bromley is an utterly compelling memoir - had Candy Darling lived in Croydon his experience would have been identical." Michael Bracewell, The Guardian "a pervy gem" jon savage. "you're the nastiest of the punk boys, those who know who dead pirates are" kathy acker. "intense" dennis cooper."

Janet Street-Porter, Independent on Sunday, April 9, 2006

"I interviewed the Clash, the Pistols, and Siouxsie long before they were signed. Berlin Bromley has brought it all back."

5.0 out of 5 stars Overground for identity, 28 April 2006
By Simon Jones (Giddy London) - See all my reviews

I found myself reading this in one go- I couldn't put it down (yes, cliched but true!)

I've always wondered what life in the 70s and in the suburbs was like. Was it really as bad as the first wave (ie the people who mattered!) of London punks said it was. It would appear so.

Marshall captures perfectly the zeitgeist of the time and what was done to remedy it. He also captures the violence in the air- being a freak back then wasn't a career move like today. You risked life and limb to be an individual. It makes the people celebrated in this book all the more special (with a few exceptions haha!).

Its one of the best books about 70s London, glam, punk and everything else going on in society at the time that I've ever read.

If you're interested in punk, the Banshees, subculture or indeed just pop culture and an important period of British history this book will astound you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slight memoirs of a punk scenester, 16 May 2006
By GB100 "GB100" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
I enjoyed this book but felt that it was let down by poor editing and the overuse of commas, which hampered the flow of the text throughout. Ultimately, the blurb makes Berlin's story sound more eventful than it actually is and, while it's nice to read about the punk era and its many colourful characters, including Siouxsie pre-fame, I think the era has been documented more successfully in memoirs by the likes of Boy George and Steve Strange. Worth a look if you're interested in this kind of thing, but don't expect a meaty read.
