Product Description

Product Description

Frank Zappa always did it differently, and here his fans do too. With delegates from Paris, Rome, Leipzig and Vauxhall, this parodic conference included papers called 'Arf'. Canine Continuity in the Output Macrostructure' and 'The Mental Hygiene Dilemma.' Zen Buddhism, Frankfurt school Marxism, Philip K. Dick and the Zappologically Deranged are used to denounce Madonna, postmodernism, hippies and everything you hold dear.

About the Author

Ben Watson, music journalist and longstanding contributor to The Wire, Hi-Fi News and Signal Noise, is well-known for his deviant and polemical music criticism and is an acknowledged expert on Frank Zappa having previously written Frank Zappa: The Negative Dialectics of Doodle Improvisation. Esther Leslie is a reader in humanities at Birkbeck College, University of London.

4.0 out of 5 stars Zappologists tear down the pomo poe faced academy, 8 Jan 2006
By vapidness (NE Scotland) - See all my reviews
If you take postmodernism too seriously, or your academic career depends on it, you won't like this. If you think dada is to be studied rather than practised, you won't like this. If you don't like Zappa, you won't like this.

If you think academics and politicians are there to be mocked and you like music you stand a fair chance of liking this.

If you like Zappa you stand a fair chance of liking this.

If the prospect of a musicological analysis of the truly subversive nature of Watermelon in Easterhay, or a comparison of Finnegan's Wake and Zappa's lyrics intrigues you you should give this collection of lectures a look.

4.0 out of 5 stars The ravings of several lunatics (I mean that in a good way), 1 Jun 2006
By colski (Aberdeen, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This is pretty much a Ben Watson book, or "the negative Dialectics of Poodle Play" for the masses. Lectures (diatribes)written by people who seem to have a kind of tourettes which causes them to issue forth as many long, obscure and made-up words as they can to describe infinitesimal vagaries on a macrocosmic/semiotic/continously evolving subject matter, ie Frank Zappa and his music. Some of the essays are actually interesting, some ridiculously pretensious (but the authors don't seem to mind that criticism at all), and some of the technical critiques on music and music terms are amatuerish and downright erroneous, but overall it's a pleasant and unchallenging bathtime read. Leave it in the bathroom and your party guests will be continuously impressed at your obscure choice of reading matter.
