Product Description

Product Description

In May 1967, Procol Harum smashed into the charts all over the world, and into chart history, with a song called "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Combining Gary Brooker's soulful voice, Keith Reid's enigmatic lyrics and Matthew Fisher's sweeping organ, it became one of the enduring anthems of the 1960s. Before they split in 1977 Procol Harum went on to make some of the best albums of the era, including classics such as "Shine on Brightly" and "A Salty Dog". This book, drawn from years of research by musician and novelist Claes Johansen, is an insightful look at one of Britain's finest ever rock acts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Are you one of 14 million?, 15 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This account of a group who thirty years after their major hit (owned by some 14 million people I believe) still make intermittent live appearances, is not your average bottom-kissing merchandise. It is written by someone who clearly appreciates the music and has had a good rapport with the musicians yet still has sufficient detachment to criticise that which he doesn't like. So if you WERE alive in the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties (or Nineties) and don't quite remember where you go after 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' (or indeed where you were before you heard it) this is your chance to find out...

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and well researched book with a personal touch., 23 Feb 2000
By A Customer
For Claes Johansen this book has obviously been a labour of love , the mixture of factual with anecdotal makes for an absorbing read for both obsessives and casual readers alike . For those that don't know Claes has shone a light down some of the more obscure alleys of rock connections , Wilko Johnson and Gary Brooker at the same school ! well I never. I don't know if there is a rock family tree for Procul but from what Claes has laid out there would need to be a seriously large sheet of paper involved. So Claes how about something similar on the Tull !
