Review
The best thing of its kind I have ever seen. Exactly the kind of thing I have wanted for years to put into the hands of students. Professor Charles Adams (McGill University); 'This book is a valuable addition to existing Islamic jurisprudential literature in English ... remarkably successful. 5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent work, 21 Jan 2005
By A Customer
A truly magnificent book which in a relatively short number of pages explains the foundations of Islamic Jurisprendence and the numerous different sources and principles that are gone through before legal ruling are arrived at. One is left in awe of the Professor's knowledge and that of the great Muslim scholars of the past 1400 years and how intricate and detailed their knowledge had to be to derive legal rulings from Islamic texts such as the Quran and Hadith and the amazing breath and depth of traditional Islamic scholarship. The book is very academic and can be hard going for the layperson (ideally it would have copious notes explaining what is only given in shorthand). At the very least it should give readers (Muslim and Non-Muslims alike) some humility and realisation that numerous disciplines need to be mastered before one can make rulings about Islam or commentaries on the Quran - even just knowing Arabic is not enough!!
