It has always surprised me that given its long ancient history.It has taken this long for somebody to take up the challenge and write a witty, informative and highly readable book about St. Andrews - its not just about golf! Tobert has filled the role wonderfuly and will hopefuly entice the tourist or 'New Pilgrim' to visit the town's other jewels. Yes there is life off the links, but beware its traffic wardens are infamous and resistence is futile! Congratulations to Tobert for accepting the challenge and at last St. Andrews has a local answer to Bill Bryson and James Dodson.

The best book about St Andrews by someone who lives here. It's delighted residents of the town like myself, and people from further afield. If you are planning on a visit to the town, maybe to play on the famous Old Course, get a copy of this book and you'll enjoy your visit even more. It's great on golf, but not everyone (myself included) like the sport as much as the R&A obsessives - and the merit of this book is how much further than golf this book takes you. You will get a potted history of all the funny and interesting stuff that's happened in this perfect little city over the ages. A must have!
