By grant williamson (Falkirk,Scotland.) - See all my reviews
Every Scottish School Kid knows who Robert The Bruce is and was.Yet very few know anything other than The Battle of Bannockburn. This book gives a fascinating and very interesting account of The Bruces' Life.It not only descibes his heroic rise to become King of Scots but also tells of the mans great political awareness and his ruthlessness - when he killed Comyn in a Church. The lead up to Bannockburn - brought on by his brothers eagerness to gain control of Stirling Castle to me is almost as important as the battle of Bannockburn itself. The near conquest of England - and near killing of Edward by the Black Douglas lets the reader imagine how close this actually was.The unfolding story of The Black Douglas culminating in his death at the crusades is not only heartening but sad - although it left me with great admiration for the man.
At the start of the film Braveheart - The Bruce says 'HISTORY IS WRITTEN BY THOSE THAT HAVE HANGED HEROES'.As the Author states in the book no-one in Berwick knows or cares to know what The English did to their town and many others. On the Trail of Robert the Bruce to me redresses the balance by the use of fact.THIS BOOK SHOULD BE PART OF THE CURRICULUM IN ALL SCOTTISH SCHOOLS. If you havent read it - do so now - it will open your eyes and your mind to what could have been and what could still be.
