Book Description
In the eighteenth century, the Machars, like much of Wigtownshire, was famed for the raising of black cattle; by the late nineteenth, it was benefiting from advances in dairying technique. The area was poised to take advantage of the expansion of the railway network which gave access to the markets in the centres of population for liquid milk and cheese. The presence of creamery buildings in most Machars towns and villages testifies to the importance of this specialisation. Thanks to the generosity of many individuals and families connected with farming in the Machars, we have gathered together a collection which consists almost entirely of previously unknown and unpublished material.
