5.0 out of 5 stars A vital part of your library, 25 Nov 2001
Higaonna Morio (Goju Ryu Shuseki Shihan) has taken years of difficult research through Japan, Okinawa, China and South East Asia, and combined his findings in this one book.
It covers many of the subjects dear to the heart of practitioners of the Goju system, as well as insights into the culture and methodology of Okinawan Karate during its heyday, through the eyes of men who lived, and trained, with the old masters.
This book is a window into a world we have previously only dreamed about, and I believe it is a vital part of any library on the Martial Arts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for those interested in karate history, 24 Jul 2006
By Kam Wing Pang (Hong Kong) - See all my reviews
This book is a great read for those martial artists who are interested in the development of one of the major styles of Okinawan karate.

The book describes the development of Goju Ryu karate from it's beginning in Okinawa, to Fujian province in China, Hawaii and back to Okinawa.

What is great about the book is the amount of research that Sensei Morio Higaonna has done, both in Okinawa and also in China. He has tried to trace the origins and developmental stages of Goju ryu and I am so glad that all this has been written down and shared to us. He is continually making research with frequent trips to China.

I eagerly await a new edition of this book with more insights into Goju Karate and also it's Chinese connection.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like karate, read this book and LIVE karate!, 12 Jun 2001
By A Customer
The book is like a time travel to the beginnings of karate itself. While reading the book one is absorbed completly, and sometimes one can even feel Kanryo Sensei or Chojun Sensei testing the shime of Sanchin Kata. For someone that likes Karate this book is one to BUY, and more than buy ... READ READ READ!!! As Morio Higaonna Sensei would say: once more, once more, once more!
