5.0 out of 5 stars Get back on track, using the power of the drum, 5 Mar 2001

Review of The power of healing by Robert Lawerence Friedman

This book, is one of healing unlike any book I have read before. Friedman highlights the power of acknowledging a part of our psyche, that we usually ignore. But reading this book is like remembering rather than learning something new; remembering how we once were, and how we innately knew how to keep ourselves whole and nurture our spirits. This book is like a roadmap of how to get back to that space and rejuvenate our lives.

People have strived for success so avidly, and embraced technology advancements with such fervour, that they are starting to wake up from the dream of excess. Realising that they have forgotten themselves to the fast-paced money-worshipping world we live in.

Friedman shows us how to get back on track, using the power of the drum to delve back into our collective unconsciousness and reclaim our birthright.

The drum has been used from the beginning of time, by all cultures and races, to: release tension, ground us in ritual, and as an everyday part of existence.

Friedman highlights what we have always known - why we tap our foot to a good beat, or feel uneasy if our musical environment does not suit our mood - that it is the beat that moves us and that our heart synchronises with the beat. We cannot ignore it.

This relates back to our time in the womb. The first sound any of us heard was the beat of our mothers heart. But our entire bodies, and the natural world on which we have superimposed our own, on are made up of rhythms and cycles. It is communication on a different level.

But what surprised me, is the depth of power for long lasting effects the drum can have and how it has been used successfully, to treat: war veterans, people with Altzheimer's disease, cancer, paralysis, speech problems, addiction and much more.

This book should be read by anyone interested in healing themselves or their world, by anyone who has ever been entranced by a beat and wondered why; for anyone who loves music, clubbers and classical musicians. This book is a storehouse of fascinating information and a way back to where we should be. It points one possible way for getting the planet back on course.
