A widely accepted and respected translation that's stood the test of time. Accessing the quran through the English language is always going to be a difficult proposition, as the poetry and power of the original just can't be conveyed in a translation. Yusuf Ali's is a valiant attempt, and a good way in. My only criticsim would be in the use of Old (biblical) english as a grammatical style. Although you get used to it, it is a little offputting at the start. All said, I have time for Ali because above everything, his is a translation I can trust.

Translations of the Koran do, of course, fall short at conveying the multiple layers of meaning inherent in the text - as well as the sonorous majesty and grace. However, this valiant effort is better than most - perhaps the best - and is regarded as a classic by English-speaking Muslims. Remarkably, some authorities have seen fit to bowlderise it, to fit with their own misunderstandings of Islam; the translations are, misleadingly, presented as Yusuf Ali's own, although inconsistencies in the style of the footnotes give the game away to the attentive reader. So congratulations to Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an for producing a version that is faithful to the original text of Yusuf Ali, easy on the eye, has good handling qualities, and the beauty and grace that conveys easy reverence for this most loved - and replete with love - of texts.
