5.0 out of 5 stars Red Fire, 23 May 2006
By mandicat2005 (Glasgow, UK) - See all my reviews
Of all Mitchison's vast back-catalogue, The Corn King and the Spring Queen is the best. A mixture of history, folklore and magic, the novel spans the lifetime of Erif Der and Tarrik, the deities responsible for ensuring luck and prosperity for Marob, a mythical village on the shores of the Black Sea.

If you are interested in history, read this novel. If you are interested in ritualistic society, the history of religion, Ancient Greece and Sparta, in relationships and motherhood, or just in women's fiction in any way, read this novel. It's pretty long and might seem daunting, but don't be put off. By the end you won't want it to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books of about ancient beliefs, religion, travel, war & love., 15 Sep 2007
If your interested in ancient magic, history, politics, society and religions especially about both fertility, hunting & war, then this novel is undoubtably one of the best you could ever read. Yes it's very long but it tells the tales of a young couple, starting in their teenage years, through their marriage, travels, wars, to middle age.
It should certainly appeal to anyone whose tired of reading whose dreadful NEW AGE, I'M A WICCAN/WITCH/WHAT NOT BOOKS as 90% of them should be burnt at the stake as punishment for all the trees chopped down to make them.
If you want 1 book to open your eyes and mind to our ancient beliefs then read this one.
