4.0 out of 5 stars Clear, well illustrated, how-to guide, 20 Jul 2001
OK, we haven't done it yet, so this is theory...

I love Iain Oughtred's designs, and am seriously considering building one; so I bought the book as the first stage. I was well pleased with the book. He starts with clear, well written chapters on general principles and boat types, tools and materials, and then goes into the technique of building. The book is in A4 format and every page is illustrated with two to five clear illustrations, some line drawn, some black-and white photographs. A large number of different boats are used to illustrate differences in technique.

The boats illustrated are all small, under eight metres; this isn't a book which will help you greatly with larger boats. However, within the scope of the size of boats it does cover, it seems very thorough, and (although, as I say I haven't don it yet) it seems to me that you could easily build your first boat using this as your guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could I do it?, 6 Nov 2009

I love the look of the dinghies built to the author's designs, and want to build one myself. The book was purchased with two purposes in mind, firstly to assess the complexity of the work involved, and later, perhaps to do a build. I am at the first stage at present, and the book has lived up to its expectations here. It is a good read in itself, and one can almost smell the wood shavings between the pages!
