As a Persian, Hajji Baba followed their example; and during the period of his residence at Constantinople, he passed his time writing a detailed history of his life, which, although that of a very obscure and ordinary individual, is still so full of vicissitude and adventure that he thinks it would not fail to create an interest if published in Europe. This is his story.

Many Iranians have found this book insulting, because we take ourselves too seriously. I think the book should be looked at as a very absorbing and interesting story. True, there are a lot of Persian jargons - some which have been kept as original - not sure how they sound to someone unfamiliar with the culture. Rather than taking offence one must treat this book as just an entertaining book just as Uncle Napoleon is. Obviously what one must not do, is to take everything the author says as bible with regards to the culture of Iranians.
