5.0 out of 5 stars A debut novel and already a masterpiece., 23 May 2004
By Jan Dierckx (Belgium, Turnhout) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
At first sight you could call this a SF novel with the classical ingredients. Something happened: a nuclear war? an accident with a biological weapon? Anyway it seems that public live has ceased to exist. There is no electricity, no TV or radio and everyone seems to have gone.
Two young sisters, who lost their parents, live in a cottage deep in the woods of North-California. As a result of what happened they're cut off completely until one day a young man comes to their house and he stays for a while. After he's gone, the two sisters gradually change into a more 'primitive' way of life with a different perception (more elaborated as time goes by) of their surroundings. (To some degree, it reminds me of the novel 'Lord of the Flies' by William Golding).
But when you think it over, you could say it's a parable about growing up. The arrival of the young man drives them out of the 'Paradise' of their childhood and this starts the process of growing up. They don't turn into 'primitive' humans, they only lose their innocence. They become more mature and finally venture out of their cottage where they used to live for so long.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were other interpretations. It's a characteristic of masterworks to be interpreted in different ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!, 21 Aug 2002
By Rudi Haig (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Into the Forest (Paperback)
I never follow trends, 'never read the latest book - I prefer to search out less populist gems. 'Into the Forest' is probably the best novel I have ever read. This may seem hyperbolic, and in the context of reader-response theory (like those of Holland & co.) it may have a lot to do with the templating of my own life onto those of Hegland's central characters. Nevertheless - this is a book that will stay with you forever! She manages to write a prose that is so poetic, it begins to carve itself into a whole new category of media. I am confident that you will never read a book like this again, and will feel sad at the prospect of it finishing once you approach the final chapters.
I do not wish to give any of the plot away, but the ending will leave you with a WARM feeling on several levels. If you are lucky enough to be reading this review, and thus knowing about this book, then don't delay. Buy it, and never let it out of your book collection. I am on my seventh reading!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great up to the last few pages, 26 Mar 2008
This review is from: Into the Forest (Paperback)
This book is generally very well written and gripping feminist science fiction. The collapse of civilization is well documented and it is interesting stuff with a lot of well researched writing on plants, flowers and hunting. The romance storylines are convincing. A rape later in the book is shocking. Most of the hard decisions that are made are clear and convincing, until the end of the book, then it starts to get less rational. Here the book lurches from being a relatively convincing post apocalyptic survival story to an ending which I found irrational and maybe even foolish. To put a frustrating ending on a good story is annoying.
