There is almost nothing to recommend this book. London needs a great book on its pre-historic landscape, but this is not it. Not because it fails, which it does, but because it really isn't about the pre-history of London at all - there is more in the book on Stonehenge, for example. Information on the mounds and circles of London covers at most 3 pages of the 176, and almost all of that is speculation without any evidence; for example: "where St.Paul's now stands, might have been silhouetted...a Druidic circle...no trace of the circle remains" [floridness removed]. The book, originally published in 1914, would have been seen even then as the work of a crank by anyone with a serious interest in early Britain. Much of it is based on the spurious work of "Iolo Morganwg" and his friends: at best well-meaning fantasists and at worst malignant forgers. Most of the book is actually aimed at passing on "druidic" lore largely invented in the 1800s, and tragically the publishing of this book without analysis will undoubtably serve to continue the propagation of this material, which even now contaminates the public's understanding of both Welsh/British culture generally and "druidic" culture in particular. The publishing house, which specialises in fringe-christian literature, is plainly attracted to the attempt of the 19th C. "druid" movement to link pre-historic remains to the worshiping of the semitic god, but it really does itself no favours with this book. Almost all of the commentary on the history and culture of Britain would now be regarded as laughable, and the speculations on the origin, naming, and use of various features are almost all terrible. To describe this book, as the jacket does, as a "scholarly work" is pitious.

So, given this, what is the worth of this book? Well, at best it stands as an interesting example for students studying the ramifications of the inventions of "Iolo Morganwg" - not an uninteresting or unimportant subject in itself. To them, I fully commend this book - it is a set piece in how the academic publishing of unvalidated source-material can propagate an almost entirely spurious world-view for centuries afterwards. For everyone else, it is a waste of good cash.
