5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant story of a Peninsular Campaign Rifleman, 17 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This little-known jem by C.S. Forester recounts the story of a British 'Greenjacket' of the Rifle Regiment during Wellington's Peninsular campaign in Spain and Portugal. Rifleman Dodd is accidentally left behind as the British army retreats to Lisbon. Cut off from his unit, surrounded by the advancing French army, Dodd manages to march his way back toward Lisbon, only to be blocked by the French seige lines. He finds shelter in a Portuguese village, where he organizes the villagers to fight a running guerrilla war against the French occupiers.

The story is written in Forester's trademark sparse, descriptive style with little dialogue. If you enjoy the Hornblower series, you will find Rifleman Dodd a pleasure to read.

An interesting note, there is a Rifleman Dodd in Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe's Rifles (a minor character) who bears a remarkable resemblance to Forester's Dodd.
