Product Description

Review
"Highsmith shows the reader how to recognize when development practices need to change and how to acquire the skills to adapt. For a fresh approach to software development, be sure to check it out."

Synopsis
Offers a theory for software development management that suggests an adaptive culture in which change and uncertainty are assumed to be the natural state, as opposed to the conventional belief that optimization is the only solution to increasingly complex problems. The approach combines customer focus groups, versioning, time-boxed management, and

4.0 out of 5 stars Theoretic foundation for agile methodologies, 12 Jun 2001
This book examines why traditional, "heavy" software development methodologies are no longer suitable in today's fast-changing world. It lays a theoretic foundation for agile methodologies such as XP, SCRUM, DSDM, FDD. It also gives some practical guidelines for its own version of agile methodologies; Adaptive Software Development.

While the practical guidelines are useful and interesting (especially when it comes to scaling up agile methodologies to large projects), the part that thrilled me was the theoretic foundation. Building on theories of complex adaptive systems, Highsmith describes how you can make an environment that facilitates learning and change, to make sure (or rather, increase the odds) that the right software emerges.

As you can see, this is not a beginner's textbook on Software Development. It is a highly thoughtful, thought-provoking (and entertaining) read for those of us who are interested in software development methodologies. If you've read the XP books and wonder why XP works, Adaptive Software Development gives you the answer.
